The Vatican and Microsoft have launched an innovative digital twin of St. Peter's Basilica, utilizing advanced artificial intelligence to enhance visitor experiences and aid in conservation efforts. This groundbreaking project aims to make the iconic site more accessible ahead of the anticipated 2025 Jubilee celebrations, welcoming millions of pilgrims and tourists.
A Historic Collaboration
On November 11, 2024, the Vatican unveiled its collaboration with Microsoft to create a digital twin of St. Peter's Basilica. This initiative combines ancient spirituality with cutting-edge technology, aiming to preserve and share the Basilica's rich history and artistry with a global audience. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, head of the Basilica, emphasized the mission to make the site a welcoming space for all, especially as it prepares for the influx of visitors during the upcoming Jubilee.
Advanced Technology at Work
The digital twin was developed using a combination of drones, high-resolution cameras, and laser imaging. Over a span of four weeks, a team captured more than 400,000 images of the Basilica, which were then transformed into a precise 3D model by Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab in partnership with the French company Iconem. This model will be accessible online starting December 1, allowing users to explore the Basilica's intricate details from anywhere in the world.
Enhancing Visitor Experience
The digital platform not only provides virtual access but also allows visitors to reserve entry times, significantly improving the experience for those wishing to visit the Basilica in person. The project includes two new interactive exhibits, “Petros Eni” and “Petros Eni Octagon,” which will offer insights into the Basilica's historical evolution through immersive displays.
Supporting Conservation Efforts
One of the primary goals of the digital twin is to aid in the conservation of St. Peter's Basilica. The ultra-precise 3D model has already revealed structural vulnerabilities, such as cracks and missing mosaic tiles, that are often difficult to detect without close examination. This data will be invaluable for ongoing restoration efforts, ensuring the Basilica's preservation for future generations.

Cardinal Gambetti highlighted that this project marks a new chapter in the Basilica's mission to reach a global audience.
