The programmability of Ethereum and its vast layer two network ecosystem is entering a new dimension: time. The "Ethereum Time Machine" platform, launched by Ethereum researcher and co-founder of Smart Transactions (STXN) Vlad Zamfir, allows applications to execute transactions based on future events. This innovative release marks an expansion of blockchain programming capabilities, enabling smart contracts to execute transactions based on uncertain or unguaranteed future events.
Key Points
-
Smart Transactions (STXN): The new platform allows users to set the time and conditions for executing transactions.
-
Flexibility and Immutability: STXN addresses the tension between flexibility and immutability in blockchain.
-
Conditions for Future Events: Users can set transactions to execute at specific dates and times, with conditions that can be absolute or relative.
Features of the New Platform
The launch of STXN means that Ethereum's smart contracts are no longer limited to information known at the time of writing. Co-founder Anuj Das Gupta stated, "STXN is like a time machine because it allows us to guarantee the future in smart contracts."
Users can set conditions for executing transactions, such as:
-
Absolute Conditions: The dollar value of a specific asset.
-
Relative Conditions: Whether one asset is more valuable than another asset.
This flexibility greatly increases the dynamism of Ethereum, providing developers with almost limitless possibilities.
Addressing Blockchain Challenges
STXN's CEO Boris Mamlyuk compared the immutability of blockchain to the experience of internet users sending emails in the late 1990s—once sent, messages could not be recalled. However, Google's Gmail introduced a "recall" feature, providing users with a brief window to retract messages, significantly enhancing usability.
Mamlyuk stated, "Smart Transactions are designed to address this issue in Web3. It allows us to time travel forward and backward in the transaction sequence flow, unlocking more usability."
Future Outlook
STXN plans to integrate this time machine functionality into other matching applications, such as decentralized ride-hailing services. While decentralized exchanges like Uniswap already have matching capabilities, they currently only support trading.
STXN aims to build the infrastructure to support users in creating various decentralized matching applications. Das Gupta and Mamlyuk hope that STXN can support all types of decentralized matching applications.
This announcement comes after STXN reached a partnership with Ethereum infrastructure company Consensys in July, aimed at advancing research and development in smart transactions.
