Beyond Voting: How DeFi is Preparing for Washington's Next Chapter

By Mini MaNewcomer0 rep· 11/19/2024

The 2024 election cycle has brought profound political changes to digital finance. With the crypto industry investing over $100 million in various campaigns, Trump's victory promised a government supportive of cryptocurrency, and the regulatory landscape has shifted accordingly. Amid the market frenzy—Bitcoin soared to $90,000 on election night—we in the crypto industry need to refocus. The future direction cannot solely revolve around partisan politics but should concentrate on how our industry can play a new role in Washington.

Two months ago, I spoke at a hearing of the House Financial Services Subcommittee. That hearing now feels like a different era—in a single election cycle, cryptocurrency has become a real campaign issue, accompanied by commitments to a national Bitcoin reserve and a pledge to reshape regulation. What once was a technical discussion about the fundamental principles of DeFi has evolved into a debate about America's role in future finance.

Key Points

  • The 2024 election cycle has changed the political landscape of digital finance.

  • The crypto industry invested over $100 million in various campaigns.

  • The election results show that innovation, consumer protection, and financial inclusion are shared American values.

  • Education, building useful applications, and ensuring DeFi security are key for the future.

The election has brought changes to key committees, including the Financial Services Committee, but the fundamental principles of responsible DeFi regulation should not change with the political winds. Innovation, consumer protection, and financial inclusion are neither Republican nor Democratic values—they are American values. The election results, particularly in campaigns where crypto policy played a decisive role, demonstrated bipartisan voter concern for these issues.

For me, "representing DeFi" once meant advising small startups. At that time, decentralized finance was primarily an emerging movement within the crypto industry, emphasizing how decentralized software could disrupt many aspects of our daily financial activities. Many builders at that time could not have imagined this would become a central campaign issue, with candidates actively seeking industry support and debating the future of digital assets.

The election results amplified a phenomenon we began to see at the hearing in September: cryptocurrency can transcend traditional political divides. When Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC) opened the meeting by stating, "DeFi can make our financial system more accessible, transparent, efficient, and innovative," he hinted at a theme that would reshape the national campaign narrative and provided guidance for cryptocurrency to become a rare point of bipartisan cooperation in a polarized political climate.

We can achieve this consensus through three key initiatives—a joint effort between the industry and policymakers:

  1. Education: With new faces entering Congress and changes in committee appointments, the fundamental educational task from the September DeFi hearing has become even more important. This election cycle shows that when policymakers understand our technology, they are more likely to support it.

  2. Building Useful Applications: During the hearing, representatives inquired about financial and non-financial use cases. We must build meaningful use cases, and policymakers must understand the importance of this technology.

  3. Ensuring DeFi Security: Malicious actors are everywhere, whether in DeFi or traditional finance. The transparency and real-time data of DeFi are its greatest assets in creating systems that are safer than traditional financial systems.

In summary, the future regulation of DeFi requires a nuanced understanding and deep collaboration. Knowledgeable industry leaders and regulators, good use cases, and system security are key to realizing the long-term benefits of this technology. America has the opportunity to lead, but only if we treat DeFi with the necessary detail and foresight.
