Bitcoin retail investor selling signals suggest a pullback, but there may be other underlying issues

By Mini MaNewcomer0 rep· 11/22/2024

Bitcoin (BTC) has drawn market attention as retail investors have sold off near its historical high of $100,000. According to Glassnode, retail investors (referred to as "shrimp") have net sold approximately 75,000 BTC, worth about $7 billion, in the past 30 days. This phenomenon has sparked discussions about the future direction of the market; despite the apparent sell-off, the other side of the market shows strong buying interest.

Key Points

  • Retail investors have net sold approximately 75,000 BTC, worth about $7 billion, in the past 30 days.

  • The balance of Bitcoin on exchanges has dropped to its lowest point in two years, below 3 million coins.

  • The balance of Bitcoin on over-the-counter (OTC) desks has increased by about 100,000 coins.

As the price of Bitcoin continues to rise, investors are also increasing their profit-taking activities. According to Glassnode, profits realized in the past two days have reached $4 billion. Although the sell-off by retail investors has raised concerns in the market, there are buyers behind every seller, necessitating a deeper analysis of the data.

Retail Investor Sell-Off

According to data from Glassnode, retail investors engaged in large-scale sell-offs after Bitcoin broke through the historical high of $73,000. This behavior is seen as a signal of a market top, especially as Bitcoin's price approaches $100,000.

Buying Behavior of Whales

In stark contrast to the sell-off by retail investors, large holders (referred to as "sharks") have been buying. Those holding between 100 to 1,000 BTC have cumulatively purchased over 140,000 BTC during this period. This indicates that despite the sell-off by retail investors, there is still strong buying demand in the market.

Comparison of Exchanges and OTC Trading

A clear divergence has emerged between the Bitcoin balance on exchanges and that on OTC desks. According to CryptoQuant, as Bitcoin's price broke through $90,000, the balance on OTC desks increased by another 20,000 coins. This suggests that large investors are taking advantage of Bitcoin's rise for cash transactions.

Meanwhile, the Bitcoin balance on retail exchanges has fallen below 3 million coins, indicating strong buying interest. This comparison of data has left market analysts puzzled, as it seems there is a tug-of-war between retail investors taking profits and large investors buying in.

Future Outlook

Overall, the short-term outlook for the market remains uncertain. The opposition between the sell-off by retail investors and the buying behavior of large investors may lead to increased market volatility. Investors should remain vigilant at this time and closely monitor market dynamics to make informed investment decisions.
