The U.S. economy added 227,000 jobs in November, exceeding expectations

By Mini MaNewcomer0 rep· 12/9/2024

The report released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Friday showed that the U.S. economy added 227,000 jobs in November, exceeding market expectations and demonstrating strong momentum in the economic recovery. Compared to the 36,000 new jobs in October, the employment growth in November showed a significant rebound. Although the unemployment rate slightly rose to 4.2%, the overall job market remains strong.

Key Points

  • 227,000 jobs were added in November, exceeding the expected 214,000.

  • The unemployment rate rose from 4.1% to 4.2%.

  • The employment data for October was revised to show 36,000 new jobs, an increase from the previous 12,000.

  • The private sector added 194,000 jobs in November, close to the expected 200,000.

Recovery of the Job Market

The job growth in November was mainly due to a strong rebound in the market after labor disruptions caused by strikes and hurricanes in October. The manufacturing sector added 22,000 jobs in November, with the transportation equipment manufacturing sector increasing by 32,000 jobs, primarily due to striking workers returning to their jobs.

Employment Changes by Industry

  • Healthcare: Added 53,600 jobs, in line with the average over the past 12 months.

  • Leisure and Hospitality: Added 53,000 jobs, mainly concentrated in food services and drinking places.

  • Government: Added 33,000 jobs, primarily from state governments.

  • Retail: Decreased by 28,000 jobs, mainly due to losses in general merchandise retailers.

Labor Force Participation Rate and Wage Growth

The labor force participation rate in November remained at 62.5%, showing little change over the past year. The average hourly wage in the private non-farm sector increased by 0.4% to $35.61, with an average wage growth of 4% over the past 12 months.

Future Outlook

As this employment report is released, the Federal Reserve will hold a meeting in mid-December to discuss potential interest rate cuts. Market expectations for a 25 basis point rate cut by the Federal Reserve rose from 71% to 87% after the report was released. Economists say that although the rise in the unemployment rate somewhat diminishes the luster of the job market, the overall economy continues to create jobs and income growth.
