Hacker Profits $500,000 from X-Account Crypto Scam

By ToTo BugelmanNewcomer0 rep· 12/25/2024

In a shocking revelation, a hacker has reportedly earned approximately $500,000 over the past month by compromising more than 15 X accounts through phishing attacks. This scheme involved impersonating the X team to promote fraudulent meme token schemes, as reported by on-chain detective ZachXBT.

Key Takeaways

  • The hacker targeted over 15 X accounts, including notable figures and platforms.

  • Phishing emails were sent to trick users into revealing their credentials.

  • The scam involved promoting fake meme tokens and laundering the stolen funds.

The Phishing Scheme

The hacker executed a well-orchestrated phishing campaign, sending fake copyright infringement emails to users of X. These emails created a sense of urgency, prompting victims to visit a phishing site where they were tricked into resetting their passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA).

The phishing emails followed a consistent script:

  1. Send a fake copyright infringement email.

  2. Create a sense of urgency.

  3. Trick the user into visiting the phishing site and resetting their 2FA/password.

Victims of the Attack

Among the compromised accounts were:

  • Kick, a streaming platform.

  • Cursor, an AI assistant.

  • Alex Blania, co-founder of World (formerly Worldcoin).

  • Brett, a meme coin.

  • The Arena, a SocialFi application.

Once the hacker gained control of these accounts, they used them to advertise the launch of native meme tokens, attaching a fraudulent smart contract address to collect investments from unsuspecting users.

Financial Impact

The total amount stolen from this scheme is estimated to be around $500,000. The hacker laundered the funds through the Solana and Ethereum networks, further complicating the tracing of the stolen assets.

Recommendations for Users

In light of this incident, ZachXBT has advised users to take proactive measures to protect their accounts:

  • Use different email addresses for each platform.

  • Implement additional security layers for account protection.

The Rise of Crypto Scams

This incident highlights a growing trend in the cryptocurrency space, particularly within the Solana network, which has become a hotspot for scams amid the meme token boom. As the popularity of meme tokens continues to rise, so does the risk of fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting investors.

As the cryptocurrency landscape evolves, users must remain vigilant and informed to safeguard their assets against such malicious activities.
