Community Divided Over Aave's Proposal to Peg Ethena’s USDe to USDT

By ToTo BugelmanNewcomer0 rep· 1/4/2025

A recent proposal by Aave to hardcode the price of Ethena’s USDe to Tether’s USDT has sparked significant backlash from the community. The proposal, co-authored by Chaos Labs and LlamaRisk, aims to protect Aave users from market fluctuations but raises concerns about the implications of such a move.

Key Takeaways

  • Aave proposes to link Ethena’s USDe directly to USDT to stabilize its value.

  • The proposal aims to mitigate risks associated with potential price drops of USDe.

  • Community members express skepticism regarding the effectiveness and safety of the proposal.

Proposal Overview

On January 3, Aave submitted a proposal to align the value of Ethena’s USDe with Tether’s USDT in its pricing feeds. The authors argue that this alignment would ensure seamless integration and protect users from transient price fluctuations. Aave, the largest decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol, currently has $37 billion in total value locked, allowing users to lend and borrow cryptocurrencies without intermediaries.

USDe, a synthetic dollar stablecoin created by Ethena, is backed by on-chain assets and derivatives. It has quickly risen to become the third-largest stablecoin, with a market cap of $5.85 billion, trailing only USDT and USD Coin (USDC).

Rationale Behind the Proposal

The proposal highlights a critical concern: a potential 5% drop in USDe’s price could jeopardize over $300 million worth of USDe-backed loans on Aave, risking liquidation and collateral sell-offs. By hardcoding USDe’s price to USDT, the authors believe they can mitigate these risks effectively.

Community Concerns

Despite the intentions behind the proposal, many Aave users have voiced their skepticism. Key points of contention include:

  • Risk of Hardcoding: Users like Hazbobo question the wisdom of hardcoding USDe’s price, noting that USDe was not originally designed to function as a stablecoin.

  • Underlying Risks: Community member ElliotNess criticized the proposal for not addressing fundamental risk factors, suggesting that if Aave is to hardcode USDe’s price, it might as well peg it directly to $1.00 to eliminate price deviations altogether.

The proposal is still in the early discussion phase, with no formal vote scheduled yet.

Aave's Recent Performance

As of the latest updates, AAVE was trading at $340, reflecting a 7% increase in the past 24 hours and a remarkable 230% rise over the past year. Aave's growth trajectory in 2024 has been bolstered by its expansion into new markets, including BNB Chain, Scroll, ZKsync Era, and Ether.fi. The protocol is also exploring further integrations for 2025, with potential additions pending community approval.

Ethena's Future Plans

Ethena has also been making headlines, with its ENA token surging 17% following the announcement of its 2025 roadmap. This roadmap includes plans to integrate with Telegram and launch a new dollar savings product. The introduction of iUSDe, a wrapped version of sUSDe, is expected to offer a 10% yield, while the integration with Telegram aims to create a payment and savings app, providing a neobank experience to its 900 million users.
