Jeju Island Unveils Innovative NFT Tourist Cards to Attract Gen Z Travelers

By ToTo BugelmanNewcomer0 rep· 1/6/2025

Jeju Island, South Korea's tropical paradise, is set to launch NFT-powered tourist cards named "Tao" in a bid to attract millennial and Gen Z visitors. This initiative aims to enhance the travel experience by offering discounts and travel subsidies, marking a significant step in the island's digital transformation.

Key Takeaways

  • Jeju Island plans to issue NFT tourist cards called "Tao" in the second half of 2025.

  • The cards will provide discounts and travel subsidies to attract younger tourists.

  • The initiative is part of Jeju's broader strategy to leverage digital technology for tourism.

The Tao Card Initiative

Jeju Island's government has announced plans to issue digital tourist cards linked to non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on an undisclosed blockchain network. The initiative is designed to appeal to the MZ generation—millennials and Gen Z—encouraging them to explore the island and increasing the likelihood of return visits.

The Tao cards will be rolled out in a pilot program for domestic visitors before a full launch later in 2025. Tourists holding these cards will enjoy various perks, including:

  • Discounts on local attractions

  • Travel subsidies paid in the island's local currency

  • Membership benefits at participating businesses

Integration with Local Economy

In addition to the NFT cards, Jeju Island plans to integrate this initiative with its local blockchain-based stablecoin, Tamna Jeon. Introduced in 2019, Tamna Jeon aims to revitalize the local economy by incentivizing both residents and merchants through rechargeable prepaid cards. This integration is expected to enhance the benefits for tourists, making their experience more rewarding.

Regulatory Landscape

While Jeju Island is embracing NFTs, the regulatory environment in South Korea has been mixed. Strict regulations have previously hindered the use of NFTs, particularly in the gaming sector. However, local authorities are optimistic that the Tao card initiative will pave the way for more innovative uses of blockchain technology in tourism and local economic development.

Jeju Island's Governor, Oh Young-hoon, emphasized the importance of digital transformation, stating, "This year, we are gradually making preparations to focus on digital transformation. The core of all this is Web3. We can apply Web3, including the use of NFTs, to all areas of the government. This will be a step forward."
