Standard Chartered Expands Its Horizons: Launches Crypto Services in Europe

By DarshitaNewcomer0 rep· 1/10/2025

Standard Chartered, one of the world’s largest banks, has officially launched its cryptocurrency services in Europe following the acquisition of a digital asset license in Luxembourg. This strategic move marks a significant step in the bank's ongoing digital asset strategy, allowing it to offer crypto custody services to institutional clients across the European Union.

Key Takeaways

  • Standard Chartered has established a new entity in Luxembourg to provide crypto custody services.

  • The launch follows the implementation of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) Regulation in the EU.

  • Initially, the services will focus on Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), with plans to expand in the future.

  • Laurent Marochini, a former executive at Société Générale, will lead the Luxembourg entity as CEO.

New Entity in Luxembourg

On January 9, Standard Chartered announced the creation of a new entity in Luxembourg, which will serve as its regulatory entry point for offering crypto and digital asset custody services within the EU. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the bank's digital asset offerings globally.

The establishment of this entity comes in the wake of the MiCA Regulation, a comprehensive framework aimed at regulating crypto assets in the European Union. This regulatory environment is expected to foster greater confidence among institutional investors in the crypto space.

Focus on Custody Services

At the outset, Standard Chartered's crypto services in Europe will be limited to custody offerings, specifically for Bitcoin and Ether. The bank's head of digital assets, Waqar Chaudry, clarified that trading services are not currently part of the offering, with no set timeline for their introduction.

The custody services will leverage Standard Chartered's significant risk capital and balance sheet, positioning the bank as a unique player in the global banking landscape for digital assets. Chaudry emphasized the importance of security, stating that the services will adhere to high standards as a regulated entity in Europe.

Expansion of Digital Asset Strategy

The launch in Luxembourg is a continuation of Standard Chartered's digital asset strategy, which has seen the bank expand its crypto custody services to other regions, including the United Arab Emirates, where it debuted similar offerings in September 2024. This expansion reflects the bank's commitment to supporting its clients in navigating the evolving landscape of digital finance.

Margaret Harwood-Jones, Standard Chartered’s global head of financing, expressed excitement about the new services, highlighting their potential to transform traditional finance. She stated, "We are incredibly proud to be paving the way for our institutional clients to access the digital asset ecosystem."

A Long-Term Vision

Standard Chartered's journey into the crypto space has been in the making for several years. The bank was first reported to be developing crypto trading services in June 2024, with plans to operate under its foreign exchange trading unit from London. However, the groundwork for these services began even earlier, with discussions of launching a crypto exchange in Europe dating back to 2021.

In September 2021, Standard Chartered joined an alliance of fintech companies and banks aimed at promoting best practices in the crypto industry. This collaboration included major players such as Coinbase and Huobi, underscoring the bank's proactive approach to embracing digital assets.

As Standard Chartered embarks on this new chapter in Europe, the banking giant is poised to play a pivotal role in the integration of cryptocurrency into mainstream finance, catering to the growing demand for secure and regulated digital asset services.
