Mudrex Halts Withdrawals: What You Need To Know

By DarshitaNewcomer0 rep· 1/12/2025

Indian cryptocurrency exchange Mudrex has temporarily suspended crypto withdrawals, sparking significant concern among its user base. The company announced that this suspension, effective from January 11 until January 28, is part of an initiative to enhance its compliance framework and prevent potential misuse by malicious actors.

Key Takeaways

  • Mudrex has paused crypto withdrawals until January 28.

  • The suspension is aimed at upgrading compliance measures.

  • Users have expressed skepticism and concern over the decision.

  • CoinDCX has recently introduced crypto withdrawals for its users.

Background of The Suspension

On January 11, Mudrex announced the suspension of crypto withdrawals, leaving many users confused and anxious about their funds. The exchange's co-founder and CEO, Edul Patel, explained that the decision was necessary to ensure the platform's infrastructure is robust enough to prevent misuse. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a secure environment in the rapidly evolving crypto landscape.

Patel stated, "You need to do that with something as critical as crypto. If the infrastructure is not correct, it is very easy for it to be misused for nefarious activities. As a responsible platform, we need to make sure that our systems are in place and we are improving the services at all points in time."

Community Reaction

The announcement triggered a wave of backlash from the crypto community. Prominent crypto trader Vivan Live took to social media, urging users to withdraw their funds immediately. His warning resonated with many, leading to increased anxiety among Mudrex users.

Another community member, Aakash Athawasya, expressed doubts about Mudrex's intentions, suggesting that the exchange might not have offered genuine crypto withdrawals in the first place. He criticized the platform for providing “price exposure, not ownership,” and advised against using Mudrex altogether.

Mudrex's Growth Amidst Challenges

Despite the current turmoil, Mudrex has reported impressive growth metrics. The exchange has seen a 200% increase in its user base over the past year, reaching three million users. Additionally, trading volume surged twenty-fold in December, hitting $200 million. This growth comes at a time when the Indian crypto market is facing increasing regulatory scrutiny, leading to other exchanges, such as Bybit, suspending operations in the country.

Regulatory Landscape in India

The Indian government has been tightening regulations around cryptocurrency, which has led to significant changes in the market. Bybit, for instance, announced on January 12 that it would restrict services, including crypto trading and account openings, due to evolving regulatory developments. This has created a challenging environment for exchanges operating in India.

CoinDCX's New Offering

In contrast to Mudrex's withdrawal suspension, CoinDCX has recently launched a crypto withdrawal feature for its users. On January 6, CEO Sumit Gupta announced that the first phase of this rollout would allow 1.5 million users to access crypto withdrawals, with plans for further expansion. However, users opting for this feature will need to permanently disable their Indian rupee deposit functionality, although rupee withdrawals will still be available.

Conclusion

The temporary suspension of crypto withdrawals by Mudrex has raised significant concerns among its users, highlighting the challenges faced by cryptocurrency exchanges in India amidst regulatory scrutiny. As the situation unfolds, users are advised to stay informed and consider their options carefully. Meanwhile, the contrasting approach taken by CoinDCX may provide a glimpse into the future of crypto operations in the region.
