Bitpanda Achieves MiCA License in Germany, Paving the Way for EU Expansion

By DarshitaNewcomer0 rep· 1/27/2025

Austrian fintech unicorn Bitpanda has made headlines by securing a license under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework. This significant achievement allows Bitpanda to operate across all 27 EU member states, marking a pivotal moment for the company and the broader cryptocurrency landscape in Europe.

Key Takeaways

  • Bitpanda has received a MiCA license from Germany’s BaFin, effective immediately.

  • The license enables Bitpanda to operate in all 27 EU member states under a unified regulatory framework.

  • Bitpanda is the second crypto asset service provider to obtain this license since MiCA's full implementation on December 30, 2024.

Importance of MiCA License

The MiCA license is crucial for Bitpanda as it enhances the company's credibility and operational scope within the European market. With this license, Bitpanda can offer its services in a regulated environment, which is expected to foster greater trust among users and investors.

CEO's Perspective on Regulation

Eric Demuth, co-founder and CEO of Bitpanda, emphasized the necessity for consistent and robust enforcement of the MiCA regulations. He stated that the effectiveness of this regulatory framework hinges on the EU's ability to enforce compliance among crypto asset service providers (CASPs).

Demuth expressed concerns about foreign CASPs operating without adhering to these regulations, likening the situation to a “Wild West” scenario. He noted:

"Without consistent and robust enforcement, this legislative milestone risks being ineffective and puts those who actually try hard to comply with European regulation in a significantly worse competitive position."

Looking to the U.S. for Inspiration

In his remarks, Demuth also called on European lawmakers to take cues from the United States, which is rapidly positioning itself as a global crypto hub. He pointed out that the U.S. has set new benchmarks in regulatory speed and determination, which could challenge the EU's competitive edge in the crypto sector.

He stated:

"The speed and determination with which the U.S. is positioning itself as the global crypto hub are setting new benchmarks. The EU should be self-confident to do the same."

Competitive Landscape

Bitpanda is now the second CASP to secure BaFin’s MiCA license, following Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody, which received its license earlier this month. This development highlights a growing trend among cryptocurrency firms to seek regulatory approval in order to enhance their operational legitimacy and market presence.

Conclusion

The acquisition of the MiCA license by Bitpanda is a significant milestone not only for the company but also for the European cryptocurrency market. As regulatory frameworks like MiCA take shape, they are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of crypto adoption and innovation in Europe. With leaders like Bitpanda paving the way, the EU may be on the brink of a new era in digital finance.
