By ToTo BugelmanNewcomer0 rep· 1/28/2025

Bitfarms, a leading Bitcoin mining company, has announced the sale of its largest mining facility in Paraguay to Hive Digital Technologies for approximately $85 million. This strategic move is part of Bitfarms' plan to refocus its operations towards the United States, where it aims to enhance its Bitcoin and AI infrastructure.

Key Takeaways

  • Bitfarms sells its 200 MW facility in Yguazu, Paraguay, to Hive for $85 million.

  • The sale is part of a broader strategy to shift operations towards North America.

  • Bitfarms plans to reinvest the proceeds into its growth pipeline in the U.S.

The Yguazu facility, which has a capacity of 200 megawatts (MW), was Bitfarms' largest mining site in Paraguay. The company also operates two smaller facilities in Villarrica and Paso Pe, with a combined capacity of 80 MW. The sale is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2025, with Hive making an initial payment of $25 million.

Strategic Shift Towards North America

Bitfarms CEO Ben Gagnon emphasized that the sale is aimed at streamlining operations and rebalancing the company's focus towards North America. The company plans to adjust its portfolio to approximately 80% North American operations and 20% international by the end of 2025.

Gagnon stated, "Bitfarms will be reinvesting the capital from this sale toward its 1 GW growth pipeline in the U.S. for BTC and HPC/AI infrastructure, marking a significant milestone in our transition from an international Bitcoin miner to a North American energy and compute infrastructure company."

Financial Details of the Sale

The financial structure of the sale includes:

  • Initial Payment: $25 million upon closing.

  • Subsequent Payments: $31 million over the next six months.

  • Remaining Amount: $29 million, which includes $19 million for power deposit reimbursements and $10 million for remaining capital obligations.

Future Plans and Expectations

As Bitfarms transitions its focus, it anticipates a 21% reduction in Bitcoin mining capacity and a 10% decrease in estimated average power costs by the end of the year. This shift aligns with the company's strategy to diversify beyond Bitcoin mining and capitalize on growth opportunities in high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI).

In addition to its operations in Paraguay, Bitfarms is also active in Canada, the U.S., and Argentina, with capacities of 158.5 MW, 17.5 MW, and 54 MW, respectively. The company’s renewed focus on the U.S. market comes at a time when the demand for Bitcoin and AI infrastructure is on the rise, positioning Bitfarms to take advantage of these emerging opportunities.

Conclusion

The sale of the Yguazu facility marks a pivotal moment for Bitfarms as it pivots towards a more concentrated North American strategy. With significant investments planned for the U.S. market, the company is set to enhance its capabilities in both Bitcoin mining and AI infrastructure, potentially reshaping its future in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape.
