Coinbase Sets Sights on India: Aiming for Regulatory Approval to Relaunch

By DarshitaNewcomer0 rep· 2/13/2025

Global crypto exchange Coinbase is making a strategic move to re-enter the Indian market after a challenging exit over a year ago. The company is currently in discussions with Indian regulators to secure the necessary approvals for its relaunch, aiming to compete with local exchanges and adapt its strategy based on past experiences.

Key Takeaways

  • Coinbase plans to relaunch its centralized exchange in India after halting operations in 2023.

  • The company is engaging with Indian regulators, including the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), to obtain necessary approvals.

  • Executives are expected to visit India in March to further discussions on regulatory compliance.

  • The relaunch strategy includes partnerships with local firms to enhance market entry.

Coinbase's Previous Challenges in India

In 2022, Coinbase launched its services in India, integrating with the United Payments Interface (UPI). However, the exchange faced immediate challenges when the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) refused to recognize its operations due to regulatory concerns. This led to a suspension of services just three days after launch.

By September 2023, Coinbase announced it would cease all operations in India, citing ongoing regulatory hurdles and a lack of clarity in the legal framework governing cryptocurrencies in the country.

Current Regulatory Landscape

The Indian government has been reevaluating its stance on cryptocurrencies, influenced by global trends and regulatory practices. Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth recently indicated that India is reassessing its approach to digital assets, although a significant tax burden of 30% on crypto transactions remains in place.

In June 2024, the FIU targeted several offshore exchanges, including Binance, for alleged violations of local anti-money laundering regulations. Binance complied with the regulations, paid a fine, and resumed operations in India after a seven-month hiatus.

Future Prospects for Coinbase

Coinbase's executives are expected to visit India in March to meet with the FIU and other regulatory bodies. The company aims to relaunch its centralized exchange platform, which will include a more robust strategy and local partnerships to navigate the complex regulatory environment.

Once the necessary approvals are secured, Coinbase plans to proceed with its relaunch, although the timeline will depend on the completion of the regulatory process, which may extend into late 2025.

Despite the regulatory challenges, India continues to lead in global crypto adoption, maintaining its top position in Chainalysis’ Global Crypto Adoption Index in 2024. This presents a significant opportunity for Coinbase as it seeks to re-establish its presence in one of the world's largest and most dynamic markets for digital assets.
