UK Bolsters Bankruptcy Asset Recovery with First Crypto Specialist

By DarshitaNewcomer0 rep· 6/10/2025

The UK Insolvency Service has appointed Andrew Small, a former police investigator, as its first dedicated crypto intelligence specialist. This strategic move aims to enhance the recovery of digital assets, such as Bitcoin and NFTs, in bankruptcy and criminal cases, reflecting the significant increase in crypto-related insolvencies.

A Growing Need for Crypto Expertise

The appointment of Andrew Small comes in response to a dramatic surge in cases involving crypto assets. Over the past five years, the number of insolvency cases identifying crypto as a recoverable asset has risen by 420%, from 14 cases in 2019/20 to 59 in 2024/25. The estimated value of these identified crypto assets has also skyrocketed by 364 times, from just over £1,400 to more than £520,000 in the same period.

Small's role will primarily focus on criminal cases, providing specialized knowledge on various crypto assets and the technologies used for their acquisition, sale, and storage. This initiative is crucial as crypto ownership in the UK continues to grow, with the Financial Conduct Authority reporting that 7 million adults held some form of cryptocurrency in 2024, up from 3.2 million in 2021.
