Sui Emerges as a Powerhouse in Bitcoin DeFi, Unlocking New Financial Frontiers

By DarshitaNewcomer0 rep· 6/16/2025

Sui is rapidly emerging as a significant player in the Bitcoin Decentralized Finance (DeFi) space, offering innovative solutions that extend Bitcoin's utility beyond a mere store of value. By integrating various Bitcoin-backed assets and collaborating with key layer-2 networks, Sui is enabling Bitcoin holders to actively participate in lending, borrowing, and other DeFi activities, traditionally limited to other blockchain ecosystems.

Unlocking Bitcoin's Potential on Sui

Bitcoin, while a secure and decentralized digital asset, has historically been limited in its financial utility due to network constraints. The rise of Bitcoin DeFi, or BTCfi, aims to change this by building decentralized finance applications on Bitcoin. Sui is at the forefront of this movement, alongside other layer-1 blockchains like Solana, Aptos, and Cardano.

Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and CPO at Mysten Labs, the original team behind the Sui network, highlights that Sui allows Bitcoin users to "move beyond passive holding" by providing access to DeFi and rewards. This shift is evident in the growing Bitcoin-related assets, which now comprise over 10% of the total value locked (TVL) on Sui, indicating a strong demand for more active Bitcoin engagement.

Key Integrations Driving Sui's BTCfi Ecosystem

Sui's BTCfi ecosystem is built upon several distinct integrations, each offering unique advantages:

  • Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC): Brought in via the Sui Bridge, WBTC is a version of Bitcoin minted on Ethereum and managed by custodians. It provides the fastest route into DeFi applications on Sui, allowing users to deploy their WBTC into decentralized exchanges like Bluefin or lending protocols such as Suilend and Navi. While it involves trust tradeoffs, its liquidity and infrastructure are well-established.

  • LBTC (Lombard Finance Bitcoin): This Bitcoin derivative, issued by Lombard Finance, is designed for users seeking to utilize their BTC in yield strategies. LBTC features overcollateralized minting and integration into fixed-income DeFi products, offering flexibility while reducing reliance on cross-chain bridges.

  • Stacks Integration (sBTC): A recent and significant expansion, this collaboration with the Bitcoin layer-2 network Stacks enables Bitcoin holders to participate in lending, borrowing, trading, and liquid staking services. Unlike wrapped assets, sBTC (Stacks BTC) is a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset on the Stacks network, facilitating decentralized movement of BTC without centralized custodians. It uses a decentralized network of signers and a threshold consensus mechanism to ensure security and liveness.

Rena Shah, a contributor to the Stacks BD Working Group, emphasizes that this integration allows Bitcoin holders to deploy their BTC into DeFi through Sui without relying on centralized custodians, aligning with Bitcoin's ethos of decentralization.

Sui's Unique Position in the BTCfi Landscape

While other networks like Cardano and Solana are also working to unlock Bitcoin's utility, Sui distinguishes itself by attempting to unify various models within a single environment. This includes custodial bridges, synthetic derivatives, and trust-minimized assets.

  • Cardano: Experiments with Bitcoin wrappers and synthetic assets, enhancing its Extended UTXO (EUTXO) model to allow BTC interaction with smart contracts through projects like BitcoinOS and AnetaBTC.

  • Solana: Supports WBTC via Ethereum bridges, with integrations across DEXes like Jupiter and Orca, though its Bitcoin liquidity is comparatively thinner.

  • Aptos: Another Layer-1 blockchain built with the Move programming language, Aptos focuses on yield-driven DeFi through integrations like xBTC (via OKX) and trustless Bitcoin bridges with networks like B² Network.

Sui's comprehensive approach, encompassing sBTC, WBTC, and LBTC, demonstrates how multiple pathways to BTC utility can coexist within one ecosystem. The network also recently announced a collaboration with Bitlayer to launch the "first trust-minimized BitVM bridge" on Sui, further solidifying its commitment to expanding Bitcoin's use cases. BTCfi is a key strategic priority for the Sui ecosystem this year, promising more innovations to come.
