Bitstamp Secures Singapore License, Bolstering APAC Crypto Access

By DarshitaNewcomer0 rep· 7/3/2025

Bitstamp, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, has secured in-principle approval for a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). This significant regulatory milestone allows Bitstamp to offer digital payment token services in Singapore, marking a strategic expansion into the Asia-Pacific (APAC) market and reinforcing Singapore's position as a leading digital asset hub.

Bitstamp's Strategic Expansion into APAC

Bitstamp's receipt of the MPI license from MAS is a pivotal step in its global expansion strategy, particularly within the rapidly growing APAC region. This approval enables the exchange to provide regulated crypto products and services to institutions and intermediaries, such as payment processors, fintech companies, and brokerages, in Singapore.

  • The move solidifies Bitstamp's presence in the institutional digital asset space.

  • It underscores Singapore's commitment to fostering a regulated environment for digital assets.

  • Bitstamp is the first crypto exchange with a major EU presence to receive such approval from MAS.

Regulatory Compliance and Global Footprint

Bitstamp boasts an extensive portfolio of over 50 licenses and registrations across various global jurisdictions, including the United States, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom. This broad regulatory reach enhances its credibility with both institutional and retail customers. The Singapore license further strengthens its commitment to operating as a locally licensed exchange, fostering trust among market participants.

Singapore: A Hub for Digital Assets

Singapore has consistently demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to digital asset regulation, attracting major players in the crypto industry. The MAS has granted licenses to 19 crypto service providers as of February 2024, with 17 holding Major Payment Institution licenses. This regulatory clarity and the emergence of trusted infrastructure providers are driving increased institutional participation in the APAC region.

Leonard Hoh, Bitstamp's APAC General Manager, highlighted Singapore's strategic importance, noting the country's early adoption of a regulatory framework for crypto exchanges. This positive regulatory and commercial landscape is expected to spearhead the institutionalization and broader adoption of digital assets.

Market Rebound and Future Outlook

The in-principle approval for Bitstamp comes at a time of significant positive developments in the global cryptocurrency market. These include the European Union's implementation of the MiCA framework and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) approval of Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). Bitstamp's achievement is expected to facilitate greater collaboration between the EU and Singaporean jurisdictions.

Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux, Global CEO of Bitstamp, emphasized that this approval brings the company closer to its goal of expanding its footprint across important markets globally. Bitstamp's long-standing role as a critical infrastructure provider for Bitcoin and other large-cap cryptocurrencies, coupled with its robust security protocols and institutional-grade liquidity, positions it to revolutionize Asia-Pacific crypto access standards.
