Square Powers First Bitcoin Coffee Purchase, Ushering in New Era for Crypto Payments

By DarshitaNewcomer0 rep· 10/16/2025

In a landmark moment for cryptocurrency adoption, Square has successfully enabled the first Bitcoin payment at a U.S. coffee chain. Compass Coffee in Washington, D.C., became the inaugural merchant to process a Bitcoin transaction using Square's point-of-sale terminal, marking a significant step towards integrating digital currencies into everyday commerce.

Key Takeaways

  • Compass Coffee in Washington, D.C., made the first-ever Bitcoin payment using Square's POS terminal.

  • The transactions utilized the Lightning Network for instant processing.

  • Square's new Bitcoin payment system offers zero processing fees for the first year.

  • Merchants can convert up to 50% of daily sales into Bitcoin.

  • The move aims to make Bitcoin as seamless as traditional card payments for small businesses.

A New Dawn for Bitcoin at the Counter

Compass Coffee, a 27-location chain, showcased the new technology during DC Fintech Week. Customers were able to purchase coffee using Bitcoin via the Lightning Network, processed through the familiar white touchscreen Square register used by millions of small businesses nationwide. Michael Haft, CEO and co-founder of Compass Coffee, expressed his satisfaction, tweeting that the Lightning payments from various wallets were "fast, reliable, and honestly pretty fun."

Square's Integrated Bitcoin Solution

This pilot program represents the first real-world deployment of Square's newly announced Bitcoin payment system, developed by its parent company, Block. Miles Suter, Block's Head of Bitcoin Product, stated that the goal is to make Bitcoin payments as seamless as card payments while providing small businesses with financial management tools previously exclusive to larger corporations. Starting November 10, merchants will have the option to accept Bitcoin and convert up to 50% of their daily sales revenue into the cryptocurrency with zero processing fees for the initial year.

Overcoming Adoption Hurdles

While Bitcoin payments have long been envisioned as a currency, adoption has been hindered by longer block times. The Lightning Network, however, addresses this by enabling near-instantaneous transactions. This integration into point-of-sale systems is expected to usher in a new era of Bitcoin adoption. Experts suggest that this could unlock new value for businesses through loyalty programs, cashbacks, or lower prices, as they won't need to absorb high interchange fees associated with traditional card payments.

Regulatory Landscape and Future Outlook

Despite this technological advancement, regulatory challenges persist. Jack Dorsey has advocated for a federal tax exemption on small Bitcoin payments, a move that is still being pursued. For Bitcoin payments to achieve parity with card transactions, experts emphasize the need for aligned ecosystems in payment user experience, merchant integration, and clear compliance frameworks. The ultimate goal is for crypto payments to feel as effortless as any other contactless experience, free from added friction or uncertainty.
