Solo Miner Successfully Mines Bitcoin Block Using $299 Device

By ToTo BugelmanNewcomer0 rep· 3/12/2025

In a remarkable feat for the cryptocurrency community, a solo miner has successfully mined a Bitcoin block using a device that cost just $299. This achievement highlights the potential for individual miners to compete in the increasingly competitive landscape of Bitcoin mining, where high-end equipment often dominates the market.

Key Takeaways

  • A solo miner mined a Bitcoin block with a $299 device.

  • This event showcases the viability of low-cost mining solutions.

  • It raises questions about the future of mining in a competitive environment.

The Rise of Solo Mining

Solo mining refers to the process where an individual miner attempts to mine Bitcoin independently, rather than joining a mining pool. This method can be less efficient but offers the potential for higher rewards if successful. The recent success of a solo miner using an affordable device demonstrates that it is still possible to achieve significant results without investing in expensive hardware.

The Device Used

According to CKPool pool administrator Kon Kolivas, the probability of calculating a block with such a power is one in a million - on average, it takes 3,500 years of work.

In total, the user used six Bitax machines from D-Central Technologies in mining with a total hashrate of ~3.3 TH/s. The "winner" was one of the Ultra model rigs. It uses an ASIC chip for the Antminer S19XP from Bitmain.

Challenges Ahead

Despite this success story, solo mining still faces significant challenges:

  • Difficulty Levels: The Bitcoin network adjusts its difficulty approximately every two weeks, making it harder for solo miners to find blocks over time.

  • Competition from Pools: Mining pools, which combine the resources of multiple miners, often have a higher chance of successfully mining blocks, making it difficult for solo miners to compete.

  • Electricity Costs: The profitability of mining is heavily influenced by electricity costs, which can vary significantly by region.
